The current festival `Walpurga's night´is, in most countries that celebrate it, named after Saint Walburga (ca. 710-777). As Walburga was canonized on 1 May (ca. 870), she became associated with May Day, especially in the Finnish and Swedish calendars.
The eve of the first day of May, traditionally celebrated with dancing, nowadays talking, came to be known as Walpurga's night.
Since the end of the 19th century, this labour´s traditional has chanced; upper-class feast has been appropriated by university students.
