Janne Mertanen plays Chopin's Nocturne op.27 nr.2 at Warsaw in 1990.
During the outer movements of the concertos, Mertanen is particularly attentive in his phrasing to Chopin’s dance- and flowing like rhythms.
`Mertsi´, like was his old name in Joensuu, reminds us forcefully of the fact that Chopin already had begun composing his Nocturne by this time.
Mertanen honors the maestoso markings in the first movements through playing that is grand and dramatic, but never slow, and his interpretation of maestoso is almost like `syrup´, like said by Fanfare Magazine (5-6/ 2010).
this is a pianist who, like the composer, can switch emotions on a dime.
According to Fanfare Magazine's Dave Saemann Janne Mertanen is that rare `animal´, previously extant in the persons of Alexander Brailowsky and Adam Harasiewicz, the Chopin specialist. But I think he belongs in the same category with also inter alia Arthur Rubistein and Vladimir Horowitz .
Nearly all of Chopin's works are in Janne´s repertoire. He won the International Chopin Competition in Darmstadt, Germany, in 1992. Mertanen has been recording Chopin since 1994.
Listen to his CDs of the nocturnes, also on Alba, were awarded the Grand Prix du Disque Frédéric Chopin 2005 in Warsaw.
