The citizens' initiative calling for the ban was submitted to Parliament in August 2021, after being backed by more than 50,000 Finns who signed the document.

Votes fell 125 in favour of the ban and 49 opposed.
Despite the strong parliamentary majority, Justice Minister Leena Meri (true finnish) said her ministry will not advance the proposal during the current government term.
Conversion therapy refers to various methods aimed at trying to turn, by sects, members of sexual minorities into heterosexuals.
The practice is usually carried out by priests, pastoral care workers, youth workers and others in some conservative religious communities.
