The Cursed War of Aggression

Then we went to February 24, 2022. It had been maybe 10 hours since Vladimir Putin announced some kind of  “special military operation” against Ukraine, but the fighting was already taking place dangerously close to Kyiv. 

Russian forces were trying to take control of the Hostomel airport on the north-western outskirts of Ukraine’s capital. Columns of tanks and other heavy equipment were heading towards Kyiv from Belarus. It was only a 130 kilometers journey. 

“If the ILs would have been able to land at Hostomel, we might be today in a totally different situation than what he have." 

Estonian military intelligence chief colonel Margo Grosberg took pause before said that the answer seems just a tad too long. But he acknowledges that the Hostomel battle that day (24.2.2022) might well have been the most crucial battle in the whole course of the Ukrainian war so far.

Then, roughly 800 km away in Pskov, 18 IL-76 transport planes started their engines and headed towards the takeoff track. 

According to VSquare the planes were full of perhaps Russia’s most elite airborne troops from the 76th Guards Air Assault Division. The approximately 1,000 troops loaded onto the planes were highly trained, and many of them already experienced from the Chechen wars. 

Their objective was to fly to Kyiv and quickly finish their war of aggression, so-called “special military operation”.

The ILs were already halfway towards the Hostomel airport when, according to VSquare, Christo Grozev was the first to publicly draw attention to it: 

“The only plausible goal would be to capture and subordinate Kyiv and install a puppet government today. While the world is watching and doing almost nothing.”

But luckily this time Grozev got it a little bit wrong. 

Two different sources confirmed to Delfi Estonia that Estonia’s military intelligence, officially known in English as the Military Intelligence Centre of Estonian Defense Forces, had sent an advance warning to their Ukrainian colleagues before the troops had even stepped on the planes.

And Ukraine poured everything it had around Kyiv to keep the planes from landing. The Ukrainians showered the airfield with artillery fire to make the landing strip unusable. Apparently one of Russia’s KA-52 attack helicopters was shot down and crashed on the runway making it virtually impossible for the ILs to land. After circling in the Ukrainian sky for some time, they needed to return to the base.

During the war, Grosberg asked for a different type of present from Ukraine. He asked for a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle, drone that Ukraine had captured. The Ukrainians packed one of a specific type of UAVs that was in surprisingly good condition. Back home, the Estonian military intelligence was able to study the UAV and Grosberg says the local defense forces are now better aware of how to defend against it. Then they sent the model back to Ukraine.

Besides Russia’s totally failed initial planning, the second reason that the war has carried out for so long lies in the collective west and its slow political decision making process, according to Grosberg. 

“Now, 550-plus days into the war, we have agreed to supply Ukraine with weapons and equipment that president Vladimir Zelensky asked on day one. "

If it would have been granted right then and not delivering heavy equipment by a few pieces at a time only, the situation could be much different.

Grosberg makes clear that he doesn’t think much of the supposed “red lines” that might push Putin to opt for tactical nuclear weapons. 

Surely, he says, the new weapons won’t cross that red line, if indeed such a line exists. 

 "I don’t see the threat of tactical nuclear weapons as significantly high."

Anyway, I don't think that humanity has the right to use nuclear weapons anymore.

On Tuesday, the head of Estonian military intelligence, Colonel Margo Grosberg, turned fifty. The head of military intelligence closed the door and gave a rare interview.

The fired man says

Russian historian and political scientist, Doctor of Historical Sciences Valery Garbuzov was fired from his post as director of the Institute on the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Why?

Just previously, he wrote a long article in which he described in detail the absurdity of state propaganda, condemned anti-Western rhetoric and indicated Russia’s real place in the world: 

According to Garbuzov thus, today there are only two informal empires on the planet - the USA and China. Russia is a former empire, the heir to the Soviet superpower, "experiencing an extremely painful syndrome of suddenly lost imperial greatness."

"The fact that Russia today exhibits a pronounced post-imperial syndrome is more a tragic pattern than a historical anomaly", 

Garbuzov wrote.

Then.

"Its peculiarity is that it did not appear immediately after the collapse of the USSR in 1991, but made itself felt much later, with Putin coming to power. More than 30 years later, the delayed syndrome, the possible occurrence of which was not previously given much importance, has acquired a threatening character..."

Some say that in a society that truly values education and scholarship, this sort of free thinking and introspection would not be viewed as a threat, but appreciated as a helpful warning to heed.

По словам главы финского МИДа Элина Валтонен (КП), Россия разрушила двусторонние отношения с Финляндией, и на политическом уровне отношений больше не существует.

Вместе с другими западными странами Финляндия действует в рамках международного права, помогая Украине, подчеркнула Валтонен. Также министр напомнила, что стратегическую зависимость от Китая необходимо уменьшить.

Валтонен призывает пересмотреть вопросы ответственности, связанные с недавней историей. 

Валтонен считает, что в западном обществе необходимо провести широкую и публичную дискуссию обо всём том, что случилось в последнее время.

"Общественная власть – это по сути ответственность. Да, вопросы ответственности должны рассматриваться в нашем обществе даже постфактум. Вопрос не в том, чтобы оглядываться назад, а наоборот – смотреть вперёд и учиться на будущее."

"Я сама была одним из тех людей, кто годами не совсем поддерживал политику Финляндии по отношению к России. У меня нет никакой личной обиды или требования что-либо установить."

Ancient finds confirm the sagas

According to CNN there are only three known meteorites with a similar chemical composition in Europe, but researchers say that the most likely source was one in Kaalijarv, Estonia, as the meteorite hit around 1500 BC and it produced many small fragments.

The nearly 3,000-year-old artifact was created with iron from a meteorite that landed in Estonia, the study noted. This indicates that meteoritic iron was traded in Europe by 800 BC or earlier, the researchers said, adding how unusual it is to find meteoritic iron used so early in history.

At the time, humans had not yet started to smelt iron from oxide ores, but some metallic iron could be found in the impact fields of meteorites, according to the study.

Carl G. Jung is considered as the first modern psychologist to state that the human psyche is by nature religious and to explore it in depth. 

Jung said, nowadays more and more people, especially those who live in large cities, suffer from a terrible emptiness and boredom, as if they are waiting for something that never arrives.

Movies and television (1961!), spectator sports and political excitements may divert them for a while, but again and again, exhausted and disenchanted, they have to return to the wasteland of their own lives.

That is utterly different from following a well-worn path, according to  Man and His Symbols. The book was Carl Jung's last work before his death in 1961, 

First published in 1964, it is divided into five parts, four of which were written by associates of Jung: Marie-Louise von Franz, Joseph L. Henderson, Aniela Jaffé and Jolande Jacobi.

Everyone lies in war

Traffic on the main bridge leading from Crimea to the Russian mainland came to a standstill in the morning due to explosions and deaths.

The Kerch Bridge, connecting Russia and the Crimean Peninsula has been closed after an incident in which portions of the bridge were damaged. Those officials are not saying what caused the damage, but some say the bridge was attacked by Ukraine.

According to the Ukrainian newspaper Ukrainian Pravda, the attack on the Crimean bridge was a special operation of the Ukrainian Security Service and the Navy. The newspaper says that it bases its information on the sources of the Ukrainian security service.

If true, that would mark the second time since October that Vladimir Putin’s prized $4 billion span has been attacked. The bridge was previously struck in October.

The 19-kilometer-long bridge connects the Russian-held Crimean peninsula with mainland Russia. The bridge is important for Russia, as it supplies military supplies to its troops in Crimea and the southern front of Ukraine.

Vacationing on the island is also making a comeback. That's a good reminder that the area a war zone.

Officiellt i Ryssland anklagar man den ukrainska militären för attackerna men Aleksej Baranovskij säger att de ryska partisankrigarna agerar på egen hand när de är inne på ryskt territorium.

"De rör sig i små mobila grupper, utför överraskningsattacker mot Putins armé och drar sig snabbt tillbaka igen. En slags partisankrigföring", 

fortsätter Baranovskij.

Kremls strategi, skriver hon, är att vänta och hoppas på att det går över.

Också bland ryska regimkritiker märks en kluvenhet gentemot de ryska partisanerna. Dels för att flera av dem har en bakgrund inom extremhögern men också för att de vill störta makten med våld.

Now Russian mercenary boss accuses regular army of leaving Bakhmut's flanks exposed

According to Reuters founder of Wagner private mercenary group Yevgeny Prigozhin, who has repeatedly accused Russia's top military brass of not doing enough to back his men, asked the defence ministry to do all it could to protect Bakhmut's flanks after what he alleged was a withdrawal.

"Unfortunately, units of the Russian Defence Ministry have withdrawn up to 570 metres to the north of Bakhmut, exposing our flanks,"

 Prigozhin said in a voice message.

"I am appealing to the top leadership of the Ministry of Defence - publicly - because my letters are not being read," 

Prigozhin said.

Wagner forces have been spearheading the assault on Bakhmut, one of the bloodiest and longest battles of the war, you know, something Moscow calls "a special military operation," with some support from the regular army in recent months.

The Lürssen shipyard group in Bremen has fallen victim to a cyber attack. As the Lürssen shipyards has announced, the group of companies became the target of a so-called ransomware attack over the Easter days. 

The luxury yacht manufacturers Lürssen and Blohm+Voss has previously stated in marketing communication that they are not interested in asking about the origin of the money offered by its customers.

Billions of dollars have already been laundered in the elite yacht manufacturing shipyard (e.g. money stolen from the Russian state treasury).

The Lürssen Group, based in Bremen-Vegesack, employs around 1,500 people. It is considered a world leader in the construction of luxury yachts and is also active in naval shipbuilding.

The company confirmed this at the request of buten un binnen. When asked, the police confirmed that criminal investigations had already been initiated. In addition, police cybercrime experts would advise the shipyard on how to deal with the incident.

In a ransom attack, attackers usually use malware to penetrate someone else's computer.

"In coordination with internal and external experts, we immediately initiated all necessary protective measures and informed the responsible authorities," 

said a company spokesman. The company did not want to say more at the moment.

Cyber attack apparently brings parts of the company to a standstill

Det är på sin hemsida som Rysslands ambassad i Stockholm publicerat texten med rubriken ”Ett svenskt steg mot avgrunden”. Den är skriven av Rysslands ambassadör i Sverige, Viktor Tatarintsev.

Ambassadören skriver också att Sverige genom att ansluta sig till försvarsalliansen ”tar ett steg ner i avgrunden”.

Där hävdas också att Sverige kommer bli en lydstat och amerikansk koloni.

Denna Rysslands ambassad i Stockholm skriver på sin hemsida att Sverige blir ”ett legitimt mål för Rysslands vedergällningsåtgärder” om landet ansluter till Nato. 

So i texten hävdas att Sveriges politiker lurar svenskarna in i militäralliansen Nato. Se den publicerat texten med rubriken ”Ett svenskt steg mot avgrunden”. 

Bland annat citat:

”Om någon tror fortfarande att detta på något sätt kommer att förbättra Europas säkerhet, kan ni vara säkra på att de nya medlemmarna [Sverige och Finland tydligen] i det fientliga blocket blir ett legitimt mål för Rysslands vedergällningsåtgärder, inklusive de militära.”

Och: 

”Man bör inte utesluta att Natos önskan att kämpa mot Ryssland «till den siste ukrainaren» kommer att leda till en situation där det helt enkelt inte kommer att finnas några ukrainare kvar att slåss mot”. 

Fortfarande:

”Det är tydligt att svenska politiker ’förtrollade’ av Washington medvetet störtar ner sitt folk i Natos avgrund.”

Fortfarande:

Att Ryssland (Ryssä, på finska) skulle påstå att det inte är legitimt för Sverige att gå in i Nato är väldigt märkliga argument.

Две недели назад в соцсетях появилась запись «перехваченного» телефонного разговора между, продюсером  Иосифом Пригожиным и бывшим российским сенатором Фархадом Ахмедовым. 

Они критикуют и кремлевских чиновников, и военное командование, и лично Путина, называя их подонками и преступниками.

Fall spiral in the style of Dmitry Medvedev

Sure, Former Russian leader’s furious tirades are a desperate attempt to retain political relevance.

Dmitry Medvedev, the position of deputy chair of the Security Council, is on the bottom.

As time went on, rumours swirled in Moscow political circles about Medvedev’s increasing alcohol consumption. In 2020, Vladimir Putin told him to resign as prime minister but gave him a token job as deputy chair of the security council (no one knows what a mess is it).

We remember Medvedev and Putin walked at the official president’s residence in Zavidovo, on 24 September 2011, the day Putin declared he was ready to return to the Russian presidency. 

But there  behind Putin summoned Medvedev to a fishing trip in 2011 and told his protege he would be returning to the presidency, tells The Guardian, Medvedev meekly accepted it. As part of this deal, Medvedev asked that he should remain prime minister, and seems to have genuinely hoped he would become president again after four years.

Medvedev did what Putin wanted, but Putin stopped trusting him, and that turned Medvedev’s life into misery.

In Medvedev’s subsequent public appearances, he already looked a broken man. 

He was frequently caught on camera napping at official events, including at the opening ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. A video investigation by Navalny linked a network of palaces and vineyards to Medvedev. He denied the allegations, but there followed a wave of street protests from those who felt Medvedev had turned out to be just as venal as others in the Russian elite.

In the decade after Medvedev left the presidency, hopes for any kind of genuine liberalisation in Russia faded. In 2014, Putin decided on the annexation of Crimea, and since then the system has only grown more authoritarian.

TV Rain, the television station promoted by Medvedev, was taken off air in 2014. In 2021 it was branded a “foreign agent” and its online output was effectively outlawed soon after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It recently started broadcasting again from outside Russia.

Twitter, once so beloved by Medvedev, was banned in Russia earlier last year. And now, instead of talking about copying innovative economic ideas from the US, Medvedev talks about nuclear war.

According to The Guardian, the increasing authoritarianism of the Putin regime, and even the invasion of Ukraine, can be traced back to the failed attempts to manage a transition.

Arrest warrants against Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin

Recently17 March 2023, Pre-Trial Chamber II of the International Criminal Court: ICC issued warrants of arrest for two individuals in the context of the situation in Ukraine: Mr Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and also Ms Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova.

"Mr Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, born on 7 October 1952, President of the Russian Federation, is allegedly responsible (we know that he is) for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population (children) and that of unlawful transfer of population - children - from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation (under articles 8(2)(a)(vii) and 8(2)(b)(viii) of the Rome Statute). The crimes were allegedly committed in Ukrainian occupied territory at least from 24 February 2022. There are reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Putin bears individual criminal responsibility for the aforementioned crimes, (i) for having committed the acts directly, jointly with others and/or through others (article 25(3)(a) of the Rome Statute), and (ii) for his failure to exercise control properly over civilian and military subordinates who committed the acts, or allowed for their commission, and who were under his effective authority and control, pursuant to superior responsibility (article 28(b) of the Rome Statute)."

This Map using estimates informed by NASA’s OCO-2 satellite measurements. Countries where more carbon dioxide was removed than emitted appear as green depressions, while countries with higher emissions are tan or red and appear to pop off the page.

Although the OCO-2 mission was not specifically designed to estimate emissions from individual nations, the findings from the 100-plus countries come at an opportune time. The first Global Stocktake takes place in 2023.

A pilot project has estimated emissions and removals of carbon dioxide in individual nations using satellite measurements.

The international study, conducted by more than 60 researchers, used measurements made by NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) mission, as well as a network of surface-based observations, to quantify increases and decreases in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations from 2015 to 2020. Using this measurement-based (or “top-down”) approach, the researchers were then able to infer the balance of how much carbon dioxide was emitted and removed.

A NASA Earth-observing satellite has helped researchers track carbon dioxide emissions for more than 100 countries around the world. The pilot project offers a powerful new look at the carbon dioxide being emitted in these countries and how much of it is removed from the atmosphere by forests and other carbon-absorbing sinks within their borders. The findings demonstrate how space-based tools can support insights on Earth as nations work to achieve climate goals.

Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky has considered an e-petition to rename Russia into ‘Muscovy’ in the Ukrainian language.

This petition in question was posted on 23 November 2022 and was signed by 25,000 individuals, enough to be considered by the president. 

The creator of the petition believes that the historic name for Russia is Muscovy, the word that was used in maps between the 16th and 19th centuries.

“The issue mentioned in the petition requires thorough elaboration both in terms of historic and cultural context and considering potential consequences in international law. Considering this, I addressed the Ukrainian prime minister and asked him to use a complex approach and explore such a possibility,” 

Zelensky said.

He also suggested that the academia be involved to resolve the matter.

Jeff Beck

Jeff Beck became a role model when I reduced playing with the plectrum all the time with the current 8-year-old band; so quite late.

To this day I've never heard anything about Jeff Beck abusing drugs. If he's been clean of drugs he would rank high with Frank Zappa and Robert Fripp & John Lodge etc.

Sure, Beck may have played like he was wired but he was not on drugs. He is a vegetarian and he has never been a real drinker or a drug guy, not at all.

Here comes a immersive cinematic portrait of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, by Sean Benn, on the eve of Russian Putin’s military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. 

According to Variety plans were made to shoot in Ukraine, but the pandemic struck and, for about two years, Penn and Zelensky communicated via Zoom and telephone. When Kaufman and Penn, who appears on screen throughout the documentary, met Zelensky in person on Feb. 23 of last year:

Murders of civilians by AS-4 missiles in Ukraine

Russian Tu-22M-3 bombers are hitting Ukraine with Kh-22 (AS-4 Kitchen) 1960s missiles. 

But since AS-4 missiles have a Circular Error Probable of 3 miles, they are missing their have no targets.

The death toll by Russian missile strike on an apartment building in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro has risen to 50, authorities said recently, as Western analysts pointed to indications the Kremlin was preparing for a drawn-out war in Ukraine after almost 11 months of fighting.

About 1,700 people lived in the multi-storey building, and search and rescue crews have worked nonstop since Saturday's strike to locate victims and survivors in the wreckage. 

The regional administration said 39 people have been rescued so far and 30 more remain missing. Authorities said at least 75 were wounded.

With a video surfaced purporbtedly shown the release of two Kh-22 (so called ‘AS-4 Kitchen’) missiles from a Tu-22M-3 bomber.

As widely reported and thus well-known, over the last month, and in reaction to the NATO’s deliveries of heavy weapons and associated ammunition, the Russians are running an intensive campaign of interdicting the work of the Ukrainian railway system.

Initially, such operations were run with help of cruise missiles like Kh-101 and Kh-555 (ASCC/NATO-codename ‘AS-15 Kent’). These were launched exclusively from strategic bombers like Tupolev Tu-95 and Tu-160. Quite often, the Russians deployed ship- and submarine-launched 3M-54 Kalibr (‘SS-N-27 Sizzler’), too.

As the stocks of these decreased, they began deploying P-600 Onix/Yakhont missiles of the K-300P Bastion-P coastal-defence system (‘SS-C-5 Stooge’), from sites on the occupied Crimean Peninsula.

About two weeks ago the Russians depleted their stocks of ballistic- and cruise missiles to the degree where they began deploying their old Kh-59s (‘AS-13 Kingbolt’): these are actually tactical, electro-optically guided missiles with a range of about 100–150km. We know that the Russians claim much more; but Russian advertisements and reality are two entirely different things. 

They are released from Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bombers, but the mass of examples still in service with the VKS is so old. Moreover, guiding a missile like Kh-59 under combat conditions is a very hard job.

Jeff Beck dies aged 78 - I'm just realizing it now.

Jeff Beck (Geoffrey Arnold Beck (24 June 1944 – 10 January 2023) was more than an idol to me, he was a source of inspiration.

I will continue on this path.

Regime collapse is now more likely than a coup.

Can Russian President Vladimir Putin lose the war in Ukraine and retain power? 

No, he can't.

In fact, a different danger is more plausible: a comprehensive meltdown of the regime, as multiple challenges overwhelm its capacity to react and dysfunction drains confidence in Putin’s leadership.

Discussion has focused on the possibility of a coup, whether an armed insurrection by disgruntled Russian generals or a mutiny by Kremlin insiders. 

Sure, as Ukraine’s driving counteroffensive erodes Russia’s position on the battlefield, that questions about regime is getting increasing attention.

The Bell Rock lighthouse also contained several newer features, such as the rotating lights alternating between red and white that were designed by the carpenter Francis Watt.

According to legend,  the legend is immortalised in The Inchcape Rock, a poem by the 19th-century poet Robert Southey, Bell Rock got its name because, in the 14th century, the Abbot of Arbroath had had a warning bell installed on it, which was stolen a year later by a Dutch pirate.

Before the construction of the lighthouse, the rock had caused many shipwrecks because, except for a few hours a day at low tide, it lies just below the surface of the sea. By the turn of the 19th century, it was estimated that, in a typical winter, as many as six ships were wrecked on the rock. 

And In one storm, seventy ships had been lost off the east coast of Scotland.

In 1799, the Masters of Trinity House in Leith determined to build a light on the Bell Rock, due to the high numbers of losses. They commissioned Scottish engineer Robert Stevenson to devise a design for a lighthouse on the Bell Rock, but the proposal was shelved.

However, after the warship HMS York was wrecked on the rock in 1804 - in 1806 approving the proposal and enabling construction to begin.
